Lilly’s Big Move!

Lilly is a 19 year old girl, who escaped sex-trafficking only to land in homelessness.
She is bright, vibrant, and unwilling to let anything hold her back. Lilly’s goal is not only to be self-sufficient but also to attend and graduate college and become an oral surgeon. She has done nothing less than excel and impress us since she came to the the LegUp in January, and after graduating the LegUp Program, she is holding down a full time job and now is ending her time in homelessness and being coached by the LegUp. 
We are so excited and blessed to help her get set up in her first apartment!
But we need your help!
Help us set Lilly up with all the comforts of home. As you are doing your spring cleaning we ask that you bring your gently used goods and furniture to the LegUp!
Below is the full list of needs for a first apartment! 

Lilly is in need of:


Entrance area

  • Welcome mat (for outside the door)
  • Small area rug (for just inside the door)
  • Wall hooks for jackets, keys, etc.
  • Small table or bench for shoe storage
  • Lamp, if there’s no other light source by the door

Living room

  • Couch, chairs, or other things to sit on
  • Coffee table
  • Bookshelves
  • Television
  • Stand for TV
  • Throw pillows for couch/chairs

  • Food, Let’s provide her with her first meal and round of groceries!
  • Silverware
  • Silverware organizer (drawer insert)
  • Dishes (e.g. plates, glasses, mugs, bowls, serving platters, etc.)
  • Pots and pans
  • Oven mitts
  • Spatulas, ladles, whisks, etc.
  • Container for countertop storage of spatulas, ladles, whisks, etc.
  • Dish towels
  • Dish drying rack
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowls
  • Plastic containers for food storage (e.g. Tupperware or Gladware)
  • Rolls of aluminum foil, wax paper, plastic wrap, and parchment paper
  • Paper (or newspaper) to line cupboards and shelves
  • Zip-top plastic bags of various sizes
  • Cutting boards
  • Toaster or toaster oven
  • Coffee maker
  • Ice cube trays

  • Good, sharp knives (at least one large chef’s knife and a small paring knife)

  • Cleaning supplies (e.g. rags, paper towels, sprays)
  • Laundry soap, fabric softener, stain remover (e.g. Shout) and a jar of quarters for laundry

  • Small broom and dustpan
  • Surge strips
  • Toolbox: Basic tools, including screwdrivers (flat and Phillips-heads), hammer (and some small nails), duct tape, box-cutter or X-acto knife, duct tape, pliers, wrench, and masking tape (at the very least, get a Leatherman, which includes basic versions of most of the above-mentioned tools)
  • Large plastic bins or other storage
  • Pens
  • Paper (for grocery lists, doodles, etc.)
  • Flashlight(s)
  • Batteries of various types, including backups for your flashlight

Building the new…

Happiness is in small victories! It is hard to change familiar habits, and it feels impossible to turn around when you are far down a given path. But the surest way to have real victory, be it great or small, is to choose something different. To choose progress, growth, and security is not comfortable. It requires dedication. It requires you to surround yourself with those who will advocate for you to succeed, support your goals, and befriend you when it is needed. The LegUp Program champions this belief every day. It is more than our goal to end homelessness for those entrenched in it and at risk for it, it is our mission and our joy!

This week our clients began a journey, and took a step forward into their goals, building change in their lives. They came and attended classes, and this week attained a measure of freedom. We believe in them, and are already so proud of them! Week two, here we come!

Moving Forward Together

The mock interviews, performed by volunteers in the business community are an integral part of the last week before graduation from the LegUp program. We are all excited as we prepare for their big day. Invitations have been sent, certificates printed, and everyone has the slightest air of anticipation about them as we move forward. During this process our clients get the chance to practice everything they have been taught through the LegUp Program cycle, by sitting down for a formal practice interview with a member of the business community. This real world testing allows for feedback and encouragement, to better facilitate the future successes of our graduates-to-be.

Were it not for you, moving forward with us, as donors and volunteers, our clients would not have the chances for success that they do now. We gratefully encourage you to continue moving forward with us, as the LegUp succeeds in preventing and ending homelessness through advocacy, support, and friendship.

Give the gift of a ride!!

Friends, we have several Leg Up clients who have been offered jobs, however the buses only take them several miles from their prospective employers. In some cases, the timing of the bus schedules coupled with shift requirements and a several mile walk makes it logistically impossible for the client to accept the job.

With a used bike, these folks can throw it on the front of a bus and get to work on time! High five!!!
